School Gardens as Commons: Fostering Relational Values for Biodiversity Through Participatory Environmental Education

We can find school gardens in many kindergartens and schools, but there is rarely an opportunity to observe long-term, using scientific methods, what effect they have on children, teachers, and the entire school community. Does time spent gardening change young people’s relationship with nature? Can school gardens play a prominent role in the educational system?

PLANET4B’s partner, ESSRG, examined, as part of a Hungarian case study, what changes the establishment and maintenance of the school garden brought both within the institution and beyond.
